WATLERSTOCK 2008 - Part 5!
The Summer Fete & Fundraiser

Friday 15th, Saturday 16th, Sunday 17th of August

Review of the Event

It’s August and before you know it and it’s time for Watlerstock!

After four previous successful events the sum total raised for cancer charity was just short of £10,000, so it was time to smash that barrier this year with the help of a scalextric track and very importantly a 5k sponsored jog to the Dev both the inspiration of Pete Newbold. Also at this point a special mention must go to Mick Gill for all his continued hard work for these events.

Friday evening came with Greg & Poddy spinning the music to create a terrific party until the hour of 4am, with money being raised during the long party evening through a raffle.

On Saturday morning at 9am it was time for the bleary eyed to start work in the car park setting up the lorry as a stage erecting stalls, testing the scalextric!! Etc. The day started to get busy around 11am with good support from locals and surrounding clubs, scooters numbering 150 or more. The DJ’s were now supported by Tony 1 Shirt with 2 excellent sets being played by Circa & Sons of El’ Rocha many thanks to both bands for their fantastic support.

The sponsored runners started to arrive back at the Dev with the princely sum of £1500 or so, they were all given a welcome glass of orange juice as they rejoined the party. With the auction, conducted by Bob Bulloch, custom show and other activities continuing through the rest of the afternoon proceedings at the Dev were finally wound up at 6pm to move to the Village Hall for the evening do.

On arrival at the village hall with the disco equipment we found DC Fontana already busy setting up there amazing array of equipment. Steve and Ian had the difficult job of manning the door to the endless stream of ticket holders slowly but surely filling the venue. What ensued was the best ever night conducted by Spiral SC, the highlight being the brilliant DC Fontana playing their terrific 90 minute set, the place was rocking, thanks guys. When 12’oclock came around people were left begging for more music but it was Dev time again until the early hours of Sunday morning.

When a count of the money was concluded the sum of £3648 was written on the cheque to be delivered to Ashgate Hospice by an impressive convoy of 70 odd scooters slowly leaving the Dev car-park at midday. After presenting the jaw-dropping amount to Joe Edwards at the Hospice in sharp shower of rain it was time to sprint back to the Dev for free food during a wind down afternoon, the last scooter finally leaving the pub car-park at 4pm.

Our only problem after an awe inspiring weekend is how to top this Watlerstock but I’m sure we will be trying to when, BEFORE YOU KNOW IT ITS AUGUST AGAIN!

Thanks to all Spiral SC members including the girls on the stall and not forgetting Albert and Margaret behind the bar for their unbelievable work and support towards the event without which Watlerstock would not be possible. And also a massive thanks to the surrounding scooterists & local people for the continued backing.

Cheers,

Paul Beckett
